AGM 19 February 2026

Minutes

Present: J Dawson (Chair), A Howell (Sec), M Werrett, F Leach, A Riddell, Bryce Cochrane,

Apologies: A Deighton-Gibson, Callum Leach, Luke Parker,

Minutes from previous meeting:

Read and agreed (proposed/Seconded MW/AR)

Chairmans report:

Chair welcomed everyone to the meeting and apologised for lack of communication during the last season and explained that we have moved to a new web provider and improved the club website. He thanked Adrian Howell for his hard work during this process which now brought all our admin, membership and fishing reports together in one place.

The fishing for the year had not been that good due to the adverse weather conditions, but also noted that there are now more fish than Trout and Grayling to catch in our waters with the increase in Chubb, Dace and Perch.

Secretary’s report:

The work at our upper beats has led to discussions with the sub tenant who was under the impression that fishermen had no access to the river accross Mr Forward’s land. Intervention from  William Heathcott Amory and the Knightshayes Estate Manager informed him of our right of access, although barbed wire and obstacles placed in the gateways are still an ongoing issue.

Lots of work involving the awareness of Fipronil on dogs has led to stickers being produced containing QR codes with a link to further information, allowing members of the public to be made aware of the dangers to invertebrates it presents.

We have at some expense, obtained water monitoring equipment and are training volunteers to use this on our water and the data will be reported to Angling Trust Water Quality Monitoring Network.

Junior Secretary’s report: N/A There is now no Junior section.

Treasurers report:

Acting Treasurer presented the accounts. 26 members had joined at Bulpins and the number of members joining online was not available due to the website changeover. The total income was £1583.95 and expenditure being £948.50 with a surplus of £645.45. Leaving a balance of £9461.36 in the account. (JD/FL).

Membership Secretary’s report:

Not available

Invertebrate report:

Encouraging figures for the end of  the year. Overall the very dry summer had not affected things too much. We have one new sample site and volunteers for this came forward.

Election of officers:

Chair John Dawson, Secretary Adrian Howell, Treasurer vacant, Vol. Bailiff – vacant, Membership Secretary vacant. Currently A Howell is acting Treasurer and Membership Secretary.

The officers elected (AR/BC).

Election of Committee:

The present committee was re-elected on block. M Werrett, F Leach, A Riddell, B Cochrane, A Deighton-Gibson, (AM/RH).

AOB:

A tent place is available at the Mid Devon Show with a small area for casting to be made available. We will also be co-partnering with RETA.

A Howell to discuss with Mr Forward, farmer at Washfield, regarding the installation of gates to allow access to the river as presently there is a fear that people may be injured by the barbed wire.

A suggestion that members may wish to partake in fly tying lessons met with approval and an offer of a venue at Morrisons store was proposed and will be looked into by JD.

Several requests for club social evenings resulted in an evening session at Morrisons for new and existing members will be scheduled.

A raffle of excellent flies tied by Bryce Cochrane resulted in £70 being raised for club funds.

A club members Whats App group was set up for those who wished to join.

Public’s ‘right to know’ about water company pollution under threat – please help Fish Legal

Public’s ‘right to know’ about water company pollution under threat – please help Fish Legal

Fish Legal needs our help!

As a club that is a member of Fish Legal, they are reaching out to us to help them ensure the public has the to right to information about water company pollution and abstraction.  This is a right that is under threat and needs our support to maintain.  The following is the message from Fish Legal, which can also be viewed on their website here

Hello,

I am writing to you to ask for your help as a club member of Fish Legal.

In 2015, Fish Legal won a landmark legal case that secured a right for the public to access environmental information directly from privatised water companies in England and Wales.

It was a hard-won right secured after a 6-year legal battle against the combined might of United Utilities, Yorkshire Water, the Information Commissioner’s Office and the Government, who joined with the water companies in the action.

The right has been critical in exposing water company abuses.

But this right is under threat.

What is happening?

The Environmental Information Regulations 2004 are on a list of legislation that Defra is considering scrapping as part of a Government Bill currently progressing through Parliament.

If the regulations and the case law disappear, privatised water companies can go back to polluting under a veil of secrecy.

How can you help?

1.  We want to show how many angling clubs and fishery members want to stop their right to information about water company pollution and abstraction being taken away.  Could we ADD YOUR CLUB’S NAME to the list that we will publish?  Please reply to this email with either ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ with your club’s name in the header.

2.    We want to force a debate in Parliament.  Please SHARE this link AND ask your club members to SIGN to protect the regulations:

https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/633609

3.    We are asking our members to SUPPORT FISH LEGAL in this campaign here:

https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/protect-public-right-to-environmental-information

It is important that we act now.  It is not about what we have to gain, but what we have to lose.

Thank you for your help.

Penny
