Everyone has their own favourite flies. This is the small section of flies that I take with me, and have confidence in, when fishing for trout on the river Exe.
My flies are tied on size 14, 16 and 18 barbless hooks.

Look at the insects that are flying about and hatching. Are the trout rising to them and feeding?
Match the hatch. Size is often more important than an exact imitation of the insect. Turn over a few sones in the river and see the insect life. Note the size of the insects, they are generally not very big, so small hooks.
We are lucky to have a clean healthy river with a good variety of insect life.
